Water Damage Restoration in Nassau County

Nassau County packs about 1.4 million people into three towns, two cities and dozens of incorporated villages. Most homes were built in the postwar boom, most have basements, and most are on public sewers. That combination drives the calls we see: flooded basements, sewer line backups, burst pipes in older plumbing and, along the South Shore, coastal flooding.

Water damage risks across Nassau

South Shore: bays, canals and surge

South of Sunrise Highway, communities like Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park, Freeport, Baldwin, Merrick and Seaford sit on bays and canals. Sandy flooded large parts of the South Shore in 2012, and very high tides and nor’easters still push water into low streets. Flood insurance and elevated utilities matter here more than anywhere else in the county.

Central Nassau: postwar homes and basements

Levittown, Hicksville, East Meadow, Franklin Square, Uniondale and their neighbors were built fast between the late 1940s and the 1960s. Many homes have been expanded several times, and original plumbing, water heaters and basement finishes are now decades old. Heavy downpours also overwhelm storm drains in low spots.

North Shore: older homes and hills

Villages along the North Shore, from Great Neck and Port Washington to Glen Cove and Oyster Bay, include many prewar homes with plaster walls, steam or hot-water heat and older roofs. Ice dams, radiator leaks and runoff down steep driveways into basements are common there.

Sewer backups in Nassau

Most of Nassau is served by public sewers. When a basement drain backs up, the blockage is usually in the house sewer line between your home and the street, often caused by roots, grease or wipes. If several neighbors are backing up at once, the public main may be the problem, so call your sewer authority (the county, or your village or city if it runs its own system) as well as a plumber.

Backups are treated as contaminated water. See sewage backup cleanup for what to do while you wait.

Shutting off your water

Nassau’s drinking water comes from wells drawing on the Long Island aquifer, delivered by dozens of water districts, village systems and private water companies. Your provider’s name and emergency number are on your water bill. In most basements, the main shut-off is on the wall facing the street, next to the meter.

Choosing a restoration company in Nassau

  • Ask for the company’s Nassau County home improvement license number. The Office of Consumer Affairs lets you look it up.
  • Get a written estimate or work authorization before work beyond emergency mitigation begins.
  • Ask how moisture will be measured and documented. Daily readings are standard.
  • If mold over 10 square feet is involved, New York requires a licensed mold assessor and a separate licensed remediator.

Common questions

Water damage in Nassau County: common questions

Do you serve every community in Nassau County?

Calls are accepted from communities across Nassau, from Elmont and Floral Park to Massapequa and from Long Beach to Glen Cove. The full list, with ZIP codes, is below. The company that answers confirms availability for your address.

Does Nassau County license water damage restoration companies?

Companies doing home improvement work on residential property in Nassau must be licensed by the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs. Ask for the license number, and look it up before signing a contract.

My basement floods every time it rains hard. Is that normal?

It is common on Long Island, but it is not something to live with. Downspout extensions, grading, window well covers, a sump pump with a backup, and a backwater valve on the sewer line each address a different cause. A restoration or waterproofing company can help identify which one you need.

I live south of Sunrise Highway. Should I have flood insurance?

Many South Shore homeowners do, and lenders require it in high-risk zones. Even outside those zones, the cost is often modest compared with the damage from one flood. National Flood Insurance Program policies usually take 30 days to start.

Who do I call for a sewer emergency?

If only your home is backing up, call a plumber to clear your house line. If neighbors are affected or the backup came from the street, call your sewer authority. For the damage inside your home, call a restoration company.
